CHILD AND ADULT FOOD PROGRAM (CACFP)...

What is the Child and Adult Care Food Program?
It is a federally funded program. The CACFP  was established in 1968 and is still a program helping to ensure that children receive nutritious, well-balanced meals while in child care.

What Are The Programs Benefits?
The program offers cash reimbursement to child care providers for meals served to children in their care. The program also outlines which meals are eligible to claim.  Meals served must meet the nutritional standards set up by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA ).

  • The USDA provides funding so that children age 6 weeks to twelve years can receive nutritious well-balanced meals when enrolled in programs participating in CACFP.
  • The Coaltion's CACFP offers reimbursement to registered centers and family child care providers for meals served to children in their care.
  •  Nutritional education and assistance with menu planning is provided free of charge under the auspices of CACFP.
  • Parents are assured that their children will be served quality meals to help ensure healthy, happy and normal development.
  • The Resource Network's CACFP provides FREE provider food/nutrition training (see Professional Development Schedule)

What is Required to Join the CACFP?

  • You must have a current center or family child care registration, be in the process of becoming a registered family day care provider or be a Legally Exempt Provider taking care of children receiving child care subsidies.
  • You must be an Enrolled Provider. (A person providing care for at least 1 child and receives day care subsidy from the government for providing child care.)
  • You must be monitored by the sponsoring agency at least three times a year.
  • You must attend one nutritional training workshop yearly.
  • You must meet federally mandated requirements. These requirements include record keeping, training attendance and monitoring visits.

How Does Reimbursement Work?
Each month a provider registered in the CACFP program must turn in a set of complete paperwork as required by the program. They will then receive a reimbursement check from their CACFP sponsoring agency for the meals and snacks that they provided to the children in their program.

NOTE: A provider may be able to claim his/her own children if
their household income qualifies.
